Bibliographic software programs such as Endnotes are incompatible with Elsevier's automated production processes. Therefore, references must be typed double-spaced and included with the text of your manuscript. Manuscripts submitted with references in Endnotes will be returned to the author for correction.

If you have been invited to re-review a manuscript but experience problems viewing that manuscript and receive an error message related to locking a pop-up window, file, or file download, please do the following:
1. Click "View" on the submission.
2. Click on the pop-up blocker to accept the download.
3. Click "View" again on the first screen.
This situation is the result of a pop-up blocker on Windows XP, a type of security imposed on downloads in certain environments on the Internet. EM engineers are working on a way to avoid this problem but their efforts involve a major rewrite of the coding and redesign of the interface, an involved and time-consuming process.

Length Requirements

Authors: Please note strictly enforced length requirements for original research articles and brief communications. To allow all manuscripts to be judged fairly, manuscripts exceeding the length limitations will be returned for shortening prior to review.

Original research articles may not exceed 6 printed pages, including title and abstract. The following approximations between printed pages and typed pages are offered to help you calculate the number of printed pages your typed manuscript will translate to:

• 0.5 page = article title and 250-word structured abstract
• 1 printed page = 3.7 typed 8.5 x 11 pages, double-spaced (approximately 250 typed words per page)
• 0.67 printed page = 30 typed references (maximum allowed; double-spaced)
• 1 printed page = 3 table or figure units with legends. If a figure has two or more parts, for estimating space, count each part as a separate unit. If a table has 5 or more columns and 45 or more rows, count it as 1.5 units.

Brief communications may contain no more than 750 words and 2 tables or figures and no more than 5 references. No abstract or ultramini-abstract is needed.
